Product Description
Glass Fiber with Binders
GE glass fiber are biologically inert, autoclavable and highly resistant to oxidizing agents and weak acids. Glass
fiber can be used to extend the life of a final filter as a prefilter or they can be used alone for low cost sample
clarification. GE glass fiber with binders are composed of borosilicate glass fibers woven into a porous matrix and
bonded by an acrylic resin. This bonding produces a filter that reduces media migration and has the strength required
for high-volume aqueous filtrations. Glass fiber filters with a binder are usually recommended for filtrations of long
duration under pressure.
Prefilters increase the speed of the filtration process by trapping large particles before they reach the final
membrane filter. Subsequently, filtration time is cut down and the frequency and cost of replacing membrane filters is
reduced. For upstream protection of a membrane within a filter holder, the use of a prefilter that is slightly smaller
in diameter than the main filter is recommended. The smaller diameter allows the prefilter to fit inside the O-ring or
filter funnel holder seal, thereby ensuring a positive membrane seal. If used as the main filter medium, a prefilter
with a diameter exactly the same size as the filter holder is recommended.
Glass fiber filters are classed as "nominal" rather than "absolute" filters. A glass fiber filter
rated at 1 µm usually means that the filter will retain some percentage, for example 95%, of all particles of that size
or greater. Because of the high dirt-loading capacity of glass fiber filters, they are often used to protect membrane
filters, giving a combination of excellent throughput and absolute retention.
G15 Glass Fiber Prefilters with Binders

G20 Glass Fiber Prefilters with Binders
- Nominal pore size.... 1.0 µm
- Surface capture of particles
- Average retention efficiency
- Higher dirt-handling capacity
- Protection of 0.8 µm final filters and larger pore sizes
- Autoclavable
G25 Glass Fiber with Binders
- Nominal pore size.... 1.0 µm
- Depth particle capture
- Thickness is approximately 3.5 greater than G20.
- Recommended for solutions with heavy contaminate loads
- Average retention efficiency
